Contamination has affected ground selected for development in various areas of the Greenwich Peninsula site, primarily the eastern and western sectors. The causes of such contamination has arrived through the following;

• Harmful (some toxic) substances leaking from lower soil layers onto top surfaces
• Effects of downward leaching
• Excessive release of methane and carbon dioxide gases caused through alluvial peat layer
• Contamination of groundwater sources caused by high volumes of localised hydrocarbons

Soil Remediation typically is proposed through the following processes;

• Bioremediation
• Soil Stabilisation
• Soil Washing
• Mobile Plant Licenses

"Contaminated Land is land which appears to be in such a condition, by reason of substances in, on or under the land that":

• significant harm is being caused or there is significant possibility of such harm being caused
• pollution of controlled waters is being, or is likely to be caused

FURTHER INITIATIVES

To complement remediation work undertaken between 1996 and 1999 in the northern, central and eastern parts of the site (comprising the former Millennium exhibition site),other suitable strategies that we wish to implement to remediate the remaining contaminated area's include the following initiatives:

• Establishment of new tender contracts to newly-established land remediation companies and environmental consultancies with exclusion periods (of up to 12 months) for poorly-performing businesses in this area of clean-up.
• Development of a land-remediation/historical suite on the peninsula site which will act as a resource and awareness tool for residents and visitors to the area, whom will be able to question GMV more about further developments on the site and whether effective remediation is being carried out.
• Continued compliance with the EMS strategy (diversify)
