POLLUTION WITHIN THE GREENWICH PENINSULA

IDENTIFIABLE PROBLEMS AND REMEDIES

Key Pollution related problems identified in the Greenwich Peninsula tended to involve external factors like transport-related features affecting air and noise quality for the area, a more in-depth insight into pollution problems is offered below.

Increase in noise pollution levels around the site (see map) with increased route transportation usage a major factor (construction and residential road traffic)

Air traffic noise sourced from nearby London City Airport

Smoke pollution levels due to increasing levels of gas fuel exhaust emissions, being harmful for residents and visitors to the peninsula

Construction dust emitting from building activities ongoing at the site

Adverse human effects of potentially high concentrations of NO2 and SO2 being inhaled from deposited dust around the peninsula site

Much can be done to rectify and at least minimise the negative environmental effect that careless pollution issues can cause. Below we have earmarked strategies that will be introduced to combat each of the effects mentioned on the left.

Introduction of schemes to encourage more people (residents and visitors) to use public transport, that way minimising the volumes of petrol/diesel emissions arising from road transport in and around the site.

Introduction of specially allocated emission zones where only a certain number of motor vehicles can be present at one time, this type of initiative will be implemented through enforcement wardens and advanced roadside technologies.

Innovative new road surfaces to be constructed to minimise noise from vehicles (through suitable retexturing processes) and to ensure road longevity.

More Initiatives

Strategic planting of hedgerows and windbreaks (see landscaping) to aid noise reduction is affected parts of the peninsula (east and west).
Establishment to a new filling station offering compressed natural gas(CNG) as an alternative to diesel and petrol for cars that carry converters. (converters will be available on site of the station).
Total banning of two-stroke engines within a boundary of 1mile around the peninsula site. (allowing for pre-agreed exceptional circumstances)
Bicycle-hire service to be established on a central location within the site, offering discounted hire for peninsula residents.
Increases in atmospheric modelling equipment in all parts of the peninsula site.

One of the major initiatives to have already been developed in the Greenwich area is the establishment of the 'Greenwich Clean Air Network'. One of the Networks first UK low emission zones has been designated within the Greenwich Peninsula-definitely an environmental win for the protection and sustainability of the development.
